Chester

Neutered 4 1/2 year old brindle and white w/4 white paws, white chest, and white "ginko leaves" behind ears on top of head. I have attempted to attach a photo of Honeydew - she is all brindle w/a little white on her chest and two of Chester - one agility from Berne, NY

Our Chester

My husband Paul and I love dogs and have lived with them our entire lives. I have been involved in rescue in the Capital District of New York since 1990 but did not know much about pitbulls except for their undeserved fierce reputation. That was changed completely in 1998 when our dog control officer in Rensselaerville asked us to come help with a little “terrier mix.” When I cried that she was a pitbull, Cheryl, the DCO, rightfully said “so what, she’s a nice dog.” Honeydew launched us on the path of pitbull rescue and love from which we have never turned back. While we lost our dear girl last summer to illness, she helped save many other dogs as she influenced the way many felt about the breed in our circle of friends and acquaintenances.

She also directly saved the life of Chester, our 4 1/2 year old pitbull, whose picture accompanies this story. In the fall of 2004, word got out that we only had one dog. So, Cyd Cross (president of Out of the Pits), who was then working at the Mohawk Hudson River Humane Society in Menands, called me to foster a young demodectic pitbull. When I went to see him, his lopsided smile and huge head on a thin body made any negative response unthinkable.

We brought Honeydew to meet Chester thinking that she would never accept another dog but her bristled stiff body soon gave way to sweet licks as Chester drew close to her. So home he came and home is where he remains to this day. Love, good care, and nutrition has turned this “bighead” into a muscle agility man who has earned his CGC, TDI, and TT.

One good turn deserves another and the three of us are currently looking to adopt a sad little pitbull who was recently seized with 40 plus other dogs rescued from a fighting dog breeding operation.
